History
This
is just a FYI blurb on the origins of COMUNICON, for those who have
asked and might be interested.
Back
at the dawn of time... Well, not that far back, but it was 1991.
Fandom in the Maritimes was fairly active and there were a host
of SF conventions in the region. One time of year seemed a bit slow:
summer. A few of us decided to do something about it.
A fan
group called COMSTAAReast (Canadian Organization of Magic,
Science, Technology, And Alternate Realities eastern
Division. No, there was no western division but what the heck) organized
the COMSTAAReast United
Convention, or COMUNICON, for August of 1991 in
Wolfville Nova Scotia at Acadia University.
COMUNICON was
an ambitious undertaking as a full SF convention including seminars,
merchents, gaming, movies, anime, art, costumes, and more. We rented
an entire residence (Chipman House, for those who know the campus)
for the main convention events. The Marquerade Ball was held as
a Much Mucsic Video Dance Party, to which we sold tickets to the
general public. We brought in fameous author Frederick Pohl and
his wife Dr. Betty Ann Hull as guests of honour. All in all, the
weekend was a blast. Well, the Dance was a complete failure and
drove the group thousands of dollars into debt. But the whole event
was really fun!
In 1994, the
organizers recovered and started running COMUNICON at Acadia again,
but as a 2-day winter gaming convention held in the Arts building.
With gaming as the focus, COMUNICON started gaining in size and
complexity (without accumulating any debt at all!). The final COMUNICON
in Wolfville was in 1998. This event was a full mini-convention
with a solid core of gaming events, some local guest speakers, an
art show & auction, and a costume contest and was the most successful
COMUNICON ever held (in terms of attendence and finances).
COMUNICON
had another hiatus while its main organizer switch from being a
professional student to something that would hopefully pay better.
But in 2002 the lack of events in the region had built up a desire
to restart COMUNICON, so the 2003 Fredericton COMUNICON was planned
and held at Gillin Hall at UNB in January, 2003. This event was
mainly gaming, with over 15 tournemant games and several scores
of prizes valueing over $600.
